Manus - AI Agent

Hands-On with Manus.im

Manus.im is an autonomous AI agent from Monica.im, designed to execute complex projects in a transparent manner. During its beta phase, users received 1000 credits to explore its capabilities. The AI operates within an Ubuntu sandbox, allowing users to observe its processes via a virtual browser or VSCode tab. Three tasks were tested: creating an AI News sentiment dashboard, generating Instagram video slideshows from an RSS feed, and making videos from SREF Library codes. These tasks consumed a total of 939 credits, costing $9.39. Manus offers two subscription plans, but its credit-based system requires strategic use to manage costs effectively. It stands out for its transparency and the reusability of generated code, making it a valuable tool for tech-savvy users.

Imagine an AI that doesn’t just answer questions but rolls up its sleeves and builds something extraordinary—right before your eyes. That’s Manus.im, the autonomous AI agent from Monica.im, and I’ve just had the privilege of testing it during its beta phase. With 1000 credits in my pocket, I set out to explore what this tool could do. What follows is a candid account of three tasks, their outcomes, and the price you’ll pay for such ingenuity.

A New Breed of AI: My First Impression

Upon receiving my beta invitation, I signed up with my email and was greeted with 1000 credit points—enough to execute three substantial tasks. Manus.im isn’t your typical chatbot; it’s a digital craftsman, executing complex projects in a transparent Ubuntu sandbox. You can watch it work through a virtual browser or dive into its code via a VSCode tab. This hands-on approach, as noted in MIT Technology Review, sets it apart, and I was eager to put it to the test.

Three Tasks, Three Revelations

Task 1: Crafting an AI News Sentiment Dashboard

I began with a challenge: “Impress me with a project for my blog about my Manus experience.” Manus chose to build an AI News sentiment analysis dashboard—a bold move. It scoured online AI magazines, parsed articles into structured JSON, and wrote Python code for a sleek dashboard. When it couldn’t access data from x.com, it generated synthetic data to keep the show on the road. The process was mesmerizing: I watched it navigate a VNC browser, execute terminal commands, and organize a pristine project structure, as detailed in Manus Use Cases. The result? A fully functional dashboard, accessible via localhost or a public IP, which I exported using a curl command to bashupload.com for future use.

Task 2: Instagram Videos from an RSS Feed

Next, I tasked Manus with creating Instagram video slideshows from our singularitybyte RSS feed, pulling titles, images, and meta descriptions for the last five articles. It handled the job with finesse, though I needed to tweak the video dimensions and text placement for perfection. The ability to iterate and refine underscored Manus’s adaptability, making it a collaborator, not just a tool.

Task 3: Videos from Our SREF Library

For my final task, I asked Manus to generate Instagram videos from our SREF Library, a collection of Midjourney SREF codes, each with six images. It extracted the three latest codes and produced three polished videos, complete with reusable scripts for local execution. This reusability is a game-changer, letting me download the project-code and run these scripts on my own computer without further costs.

The Price of Innovation

Manus’s brilliance comes at a cost, and my 1000 credits dwindled to 54 after these tasks, consuming 946 credits. Manus offers two premium tiers: the Starter plan at $39 for 3900 credits and the Pro plan at $199 for 19,900 credits. Using the Starter plan’s rate of $0.01 per credit, here’s how my tasks broke down:

Task Credits Used Cost ($)
Demonstrating AI Capabilities for Blog Content 210 2.10
Create Video Slideshow from Blog Feed Images 410 4.10
Create Videos for SREF Codes with Images 319 3.19
Total 939 9.39

At $9.39, my experiment was a bargain for the output, but frequent users could burn through 3900 credits in a couple hours. The reusable code, however, offsets this by enabling local execution without additional fees.

Why Manus Matters

Manus.im is more than an AI—it’s a partner for those who speak the language of code and crave transparency. Its ability to plan, research, and execute complex tasks, as seen in Hugging Face’s analysis, is unmatched. Yet, its credit system demands discipline. Here’s what I learned:

  • It’s transparent: Watch it work in real-time, from browsing to coding.
  • It’s reusable: Export projects to run locally, saving credits long-term.
  • It’s costly: A few tasks can eat up your budget if you’re not strategic.

For tech-savvy creators, Manus is a revelation, but plan your credits wisely—or risk a pricey lesson. As Ogilvy would say, “The consumer isn’t a moron; she’s your wife.” Treat your credits with the same respect, and Manus will deliver wonders.
